Security Light Installation in Bristol – LED Floodlight & PIR Sensor Upgrade

A well-planned security light installation can make a real difference to how practical and welcoming a property feels after dark, particularly around entrances and pathways.

For a recent outdoor lighting project in Bristol, Dan upgraded the existing exterior lighting at a residential property, installing a modern 10W LED floodlight with a separate PIR motion sensor and an additional LED bulkhead light.

The work also involved alterations to the existing wiring and the installation of a weatherproof connection box, providing a neat, practical solution for the property’s outdoor lighting.

What Did the Security Light Installation Involve?

For this outdoor lighting upgrade in Bristol, Dan removed the existing exterior lighting and made alterations to the electrical cabling to accommodate the new fittings.

The installation included a 10W LED floodlight, a separate PIR motion sensor and a circular LED bulkhead light, providing lighting at different points along the side of the property.

Dan also installed a weatherproof electrical connection box, with black surface-mounted conduit neatly housing and protecting the cabling between the fittings.

The separate PIR sensor detects movement and automatically activates the connected lighting when required, making it a practical solution for outdoor areas such as side pathways and entrances.

The photographs below show the original lighting, the installation work and the completed LED lighting upgrade.

What Are the Benefits of LED Security Lighting and PIR Sensors?

Upgrading outdoor lighting to LED fittings with PIR motion sensors offers several practical benefits for homeowners.

Energy-efficient lighting: LED floodlights use less electricity than traditional halogen floodlights and generally have a longer lifespan, helping to reduce energy consumption and maintenance.

Automatic motion detection: PIR (Passive Infrared) sensors detect changes in infrared radiation, such as those caused by a person moving through the detection area. This allows connected lights to switch on automatically when movement is detected, without needing to operate a switch.

Improved visibility and security: Well-positioned outdoor lighting can illuminate pathways, entrances and other areas around a property, making them easier to navigate after dark. Motion-activated lighting can also help discourage unwanted visitors.

Flexible positioning: Installing a separate PIR sensor, rather than one built into the floodlight, allows the sensor and light to be positioned independently. This can be particularly useful where the best location for detecting movement isn’t necessarily the best position for illuminating an area.
